When you come to Varanasi, the first thing people suggest is — “Don’t miss the Ganga Aarti.” And trust me, they are right. The Aarti is not just a prayer, it feels like the whole city comes alive. The sound of bells, the chanting of mantras, the smell of incense, and the sight of lamps shining on the river — it is something you will never forget.

Ganga Aarti Timing in Varanasi

The Aarti happens every evening after sunset. The time changes a little with season:

  • In summer (March to October): around 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM

  • In winter (November to February): around 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM

There is also a morning Aarti at Assi Ghat around 5:00 AM. That one is calmer and gives a peaceful start to the day.

Where to Watch Ganga Aarti?

The main Aarti takes place at Dashashwamedh Ghat, near Godowlia and Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Another place is Assi Ghat, famous for the morning ceremony.

If you want a different view, you can sit in a boat on the river. Watching the Aarti from water feels magical — the reflection of diyas in the Ganga looks amazing.

My Experience as a Hotel Owner

I run Shree Shivay Namastubhyam Hotel in Varanasi. Many of my guests come here mainly to see the Ganga Aarti. I always tell them to go early, so they get a good place to sit.

I still remember one evening when I went with a family from South India. As soon as the priests started the Aarti, they became emotional and tears came in their eyes. At that moment, I felt lucky to live in a city where such divine things happen every day. Even though I have seen the Aarti many times, it always feels fresh and special.

Tips Before You Go

  • Reach 30–40 minutes early for a good spot.

  • If possible, try watching from a boat — the view is beautiful.

  • Carry less items, because it can get crowded.

  • Sit quietly and enjoy the ceremony with respect.

Final Words

The Ganga Aarti is not just a show — it is the heart of Varanasi. Whether you are religious or not, once you see it, you will feel peace inside.

If you stay at Shree Shivay Namastubhyam Hotel, my staff and I will happily guide you about the timings and even help you arrange for boat rides. We want every guest to take back the memory of this soulful experience.
